I see an increasing amount of clients in my practice who face work related challenges that are often exacerbated by hybrid working practices. Less formal communication in the office and reduced time for team collaboration face to face can affect people’s confidence levels and ability to move their career forward.

In traditional office environments, professionals often wait for permission or validation before taking action or contributing ideas. This mindset can limit your growth and hinder the ability to demonstrate potential. In the hybrid work model, where physical proximity to decision-makers may be reduced, it’s crucial to take the initiative, seize opportunities, and showcase your value independently. Waiting for permission can often result in missed chances for growth and development.

People-pleasing: A barrier to leadership?

Many of us develop a habit of people-pleasing throughout our early years, which then continues into our careers. While early in your career, it may seem like a positive quality, constantly seeking approval and avoiding conflict can hinder your progress towards leadership roles.

By placing others' opinions and needs above your own, you may inadvertently diminish your own worth and potential for growth. It’s crucial to strike a balance between collaboration and asserting your ideas and opinions, especially when you feel under pressure, allowing you to contribute authentically and assertively. Try instigating and leading key team catch ups and meetings in person or online to ensure you take the lead regularly.

Imposter syndrome is a pervasive challenge faced by many people at all levels. It’s the persistent feeling of being inadequate or a fraud, despite your evidence of success.

With the rise of remote work, imposter syndrome is often magnified, as employees are left to their own thoughts, leading to overthinking and self doubt. It’s vital to acknowledge the value you provide, recognise achievements and acknowledge expertise.

Remember that everyone experiences moments of self-doubt, which is particularly prevalent when you take on new opportunities and step outside your comfort zone. By embracing your unique strengths and contributions, you can overcome imposter syndrome and thrive in your career.
