Although the power supply in the UK is generally considered to be reliable and stable, it is not without its vulnerabilities and challenges

The population is growing, increased industrial development and an aging power supply infrastructure is putting strain on the energy supply, leading to capacity issues and the potential for power outages. Extreme weather and the increase in cybercrime present further challenges.

So, while the power supply in the UK is generally considered to be reliable, there are vulnerabilities and challenges that can cause fragility, and organisations therefore need to have backup power strategies in place to build organisational resilience in the face of these challenges.

Dale Power Solutions is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of UPS systems and generators, providing complete asset life-cycle management, from design through to installation and commissioning. Offering backup power in the form of generators and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions, Dale has a long history (since 1935) of providing power solutions and has been quick to adapt and innovate, most recently offering a range of battery energy storage solutions (BESS).

BESS allow organisations to buy electricity cheaply during times of low demand which can then be used when prices peak later in the day. Increasing energy costs, combined with the need to find greener energy solutions, means that more and more organisations are adopting an energy storage system.

Future proofing customers’ energy also means investing in talent and Dale has a rich history of developing young people. Their award-winning apprenticeship programme was introduced over 15 years ago and was awarded an inaugural Princess Royal Training Award 2016 and in 2005 the Queen’s Award for Enterprise; Promoting Opportunity (2018).

The company has a long list of apprentice awards, the most recent being Hannah Magowan, who was named Apprentice of the Year in the Yorkshire’s Excellence in Business Award in November 2023. Hannah joined Dale at 16 years old as an apprentice after leaving school. Since then, she excelled in her apprenticeship journey and fast tracked through her apprenticeship with distinctions; she is now taking a degree at Sheffield Hallam University - DA Electrical and Electronic Engineering program which she began in 2022/23.Throughout her 8 years with Dale, Hannah has become a spokesperson for Women in Engineering and a champion for young people. In 2017 she spoke at the House of Lords about the problems facing young people in Scarborough; she actively promotes apprenticeships in local schools and careers events.Hannah has recently been promoted to New Product Development Lead Engineer and as the UK faces the challenges of decarbonisation and rising energy costs Hannah has led a battery energy storage (BESS) project to help customers lower their carbon footprints and reduce their energy bills.
