Third amazing show announced to light up Hull in December

IT has often been compared to an iceberg, and now a stunning light and sound show will transform one of Yorkshire's best-known landmarks into one, as part of an incredible finale to Hull's City of Culture year.

Floe, which has been created by UK artists Heinrich and Palmer, will be projected against the angular facade of The Deep for three nights next month, the final commission in Hull 2017’s Look Up programme.

Throughout December people will also be able to catch Jason Bruges Studio’s latest installation, which will use 20 repurposed industrial robots, to create a specially-choreographed interplay of light, shadow and sound in the Old Town.

A third show in Humber Street and the Marina - A Colossal Wave, in which a real ball is thrown from a great height “creating a huge virtual wave” - means the city should be buzzing from December 1 onwards.

A staggering 342,000 people came to Hull to see its first week of City of Culture 2017 events.

It is quite possible similar numbers will flood into Hull next month.

Artists Anna Heinrich and Leon Palmer said the idea for Floe came from delving into Sir Terry Farrell’s original designs for The Deep, which opened 15 years ago, and has since become synonymous with Hull.

They said: “With Floe we have set out to ‘virtually’ reshape and remodel the architectural façade of The Deep.

“We want to create a sense of drama and depth using projection, light and sound reflecting the environment within and the geological associations underpinning The Deep’s design.

“Geology holds clues to the history of the oceans; during the last ice age the ice sheet terminated in this area and we want to suggest a sense of geological change and deep time linked to the rich aquatic life found in the world’s oceans.”

The building was used earlier this year with great success for an installation called Arrivals and Departures for the opening show of Hull2017.

Turning it into a huge iceberg is also apt given the city’s trawling and whaling history in the Arctic.

Katy Duke, CEO at The Deep said: “We are delighted to be partnering with such talented artists in our final collaboration of 2017.

“Being the inspiration behind Floe is a huge privilege,which we hope will engage and inspire audiences, not only with our iconic building but the natural world.”

People will be able to see it from the opposite side of the river by the C4DI building from Friday December 8 to Sunday December 10.

Floe takes part during the 10-day Substance festival.
