Six of the Best glittering party dresses

All that glitters may not be gold ... but it's exactly what's needed for New Year parties. Stephanie Smith picks out her favourite frocks that rock with sequins, spangles and beads.

Dark brown all-over sequin shift dress

From: East.

Price: 150

DETAIL: This lovely tunic dress is double shell layered and it has a wonderful opulent glittery look, with subtly different sequins that work to give a rich, deep, glowing texture. It's very stylish with the high slash neckline. Try with a cardi to cover arms. There is actually a lovely long sequin cardi to match it at East (also 150), which makes a great wedding outfit, and that's always a bonus.

Suits: Slim to medium.

Key accessory: Diamante clutch, 125, at Jaeger.

Ivory nude sequin short gown

From: Sophie Gray Collection at BHS.

Price: 69.

DETAIL: BHS is coming up with some extraordinarily fabulous evening and party wear, as this beautiful pale-toned dress with the flattering fan-flared vertical sequin stitched stripes shows. The prices are fabulous, too. Long may it continue. This is another dress that a winter bride could easily look good in, teamed with opulent winter white faux fur stole or cape.

Suits: Pear shapes and curvy types.

Key accessory: Silver woven bag, 15, by F&F at Tesco Clothing.

Gold batwing bronze sequin tunic dress

From: Mango.

Price: 119.90

DETAIL: Now this dress is really something pretty special. It's cool and wearable and figure-flattering with its v-neckline and wide draped sleeves. Lovely sequin patterning too. It would look good with leggings and flats or with opaques or shiny tights and teetering platform heels. Check out Zara for gold and bronze vests to wear under if you feel the need. A black polo might also look good.

Suits: All shapes and sizes.

Key accessory: Vintage style bag, 15, at Topshop.

Ivory studded and sequinned tunic dress

From: Dorothy Perkins.

Price: 100.

DETAIL: A fabulous-flapper style dress in a lovely caramel cream nude base shade with exquisite stud and sequin all-over patterning, hence the relatively hefty price tag from Dorothy Perkins (it's rather hefty to lift and wear, too). Would look totally lovely with similar length cream, gold or silver jacket or cardigan, or try adding black, grey or midnight blue. Cream sparkly shoes would be matchy, but in a good way.

Suits: Slim and straight shapes.

Key accessory: Champagne satin clutch, 15, BHS.

Silver beaded one-shoulder shift dress

From: Monsoon.

Price: 180.

DETAIL: An exquisite dress in a glorious silvery nude, perfect for most skin tones, with fabulous all-over beading in a sort of scallop pattern on the bodice, echoed cleverly on the skirt pockets. This beautiful dress could even be a bride's short gown for a winter wedding. Team it with black or charcoal or midnight blue accessories for sleek look. Don't team it with fuchsia or burgundy.

Suits: Neat busts, slim to medium figures.

Sleeveless black and gold flapper dress

From: BHS.

Price: 60.

DETAIL: Another winner from BHS, this time a lovely neat flapper-style dress that has a flattering vertical sequin design and would look fab teamed with a cute feather hair slide. Update and toughen the look with ankle boots and leather jacket, if you like, or go all out 1920s in round toe heels and feather boa. This dress would also look wonderful under jackets and little cardigans.
