Question & Answer

Q: A number of our Victoria plums have, when split open, contained a small grub. Could you tell me what it is and how it got inside the plum?

A: The most common pests to be found in plums are the caterpillar of the plum moth and the larvae of the plum sawfly. The former attack the mature fruits while the latter go for the growing plums which tend to fall off the tree in summer.

Victoria is prone to attack from sawfly. In either case, you can spray with permethrin or hang up pheromone traps when the adults are ready to mate and lay eggs.
