Paolo Nutini, Bridlington Spa

THERE is a reason an album goes to No1.

It is generally because it is pretty classy. Or it’s from some boyband.

Paolo Nutini is certainly not the latter.

His latest offering Caustic Love is a departure of sorts on his previous work, a little heavier perhaps, but, judging by the way it was received at a sold-out and entranced Bridlington Spa, there is no doubting its quality.

Nutini’s soulful sound is easy on the ear and he effortlessly segways through some powerful numbers while barely looking out of breath.

He has a great stage presence even if his inter-action with the audience is practically zilch. The Scot barely moves away from the mic, either.

They don’t come to listen to his banter or to watch him dance, though. It’s his obvious talent as a singer and songwriter of real repute and variation that attracts an audience of all ages and, backed by an excellent eight-piece horn section that added to its whole gravitas, it was an almost flawless performance.

Numbers such as Candy, Funky Cigarette, Iron Sky and, of course, the crowd-pleasing Last Request all proved real highs, as did his latest single Scream (Funk My Life Up), with his raspy vocals staying true throughout.

At times, his delivery is almost a combination of reggae, rock, blues and a little dash of pop to its soulful roots. It’s alchemy, whatever it is, and, still only 27, Nutini has undoubtedly added many strings to his bow since first emerging with debut album These Streets eight years ago.
