Jazz Preview: American enjoys the warmth of delayed visit

Wintry weather prevented Scott Hamilton from appearing at Boston Spa in January but the American saxophonist fulfils the postponed engagement in the Village Hall tomorrow night, with his quartet.

It is welcome news not only for Jazz in the Spa regulars but more widely dispersed admirers of a gifted musician who pursues a melodic route along the mainstream of jazz without sounding dated or out of touch with today's audience.

Hamilton's silky skills will be aided by his regular British accompanists, John Pearce on piano, Dave Green on bass and Steve Brown on drums.

It is an alluring evening for the middle-of-the-road connoisseur with all the makings of a full house. A word of friendly advice: go early.

Yorkshire's Jacqui Wicks who presents her Vintage Live show at the Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax next Thursday, celebrated her 40th birthday by giving up her day job as a project and events manager to become a full-time singer.

Things are working out fine for Jacqui, including the rare treat of appearing at Glastonbury in June with the Cliff Brown band. "It was a totally exhilarating experience, complete with vuvuzela solo," she says. "I'm looking forward to more of that in 2011."

At the Square Chapel, she will be singing tracks from her debut album in which she dips into the songbooks of Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman.

She will be accompanied on piano by her friend and arranger, Kevin James.
