Food Matters:The apple at the core of great day

To celebrate Apple Day, on Sunday, October 24, Clarke Hall, in Wakefield, will be holding a day of apple fun and hand-made crafts set in the beautiful 17th-century house and garden.

There will be free demonstrations and activities from apple printing to making autumnal wreaths and jewellery.

There will also be hand-made items for sale from local artists, so a great chance to find an interesting gift, or have a go at making your own.

The event is open to all and is free with parking, free apple refreshments and home-made cakes for sale. No need to book.

Apple day was first organised by Common Ground charity in 1990, and has been celebrated each year since.

Events like the one at Clarke Hall will be taking place all around the country, for what has now become a national event.

Balti house bids to be the best

Pino Khan, owner of Kamran Balti House, Halifax, has been nominated for the prestigious Best Caterer of the Year Award by The Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA), the UK's only governing body for the burgeoning curry industry.

The winners of this year's coveted awards will be honoured at the BCA Awards 2010, taking place on Sunday, October 10, at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel, London.
