Gemma Almond was working as waitress in a fish and chip restaurant before starting on a Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery course at the Leeds Thomas Danby Campus in September last year.
Alongside her studies, she also works part-time at the General Tarleton in Ferrensby, North Yorkshire.

Hide AdGemma, 22, was one of only six finalists who made it through to the Roux Scholarship competition. And though she did not win, she was delighted to be offered a job as a commis chef at the New Roux on Parliament Square opposite the Houses of Parliament, in London.
Cherry aid
Runners taking part in this month's London Marathon can boost their recovery time by drinking tart cherry juice before and after the race, according to a researcher at Northumbria University.
Dr Glyn Howatson, exercise physiologist and Laboratory Director in the School of Psychology and Sports Sciences, examined the properties of Montmorency cherries in a study that found that athletes who drank the juice recovered faster after marathon running than a placebo-controlled group.
In the investigation, 20 marathon runners drank either a tart cherry blend juice or a placebo drink twice a day for five days before taking part in the London Marathon, and for two days afterwards.
