Elton John planning new version of Billy Elliot movie

The singer-songwriter also revealed his sons Zachary, four, and Elijah, two, have never sat through a whole theatre performance.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary performance of Billy Elliot The Musical, for which he composed the music, Sir Elton said: “It would be lovely to do a film version.”

The 68-year-old joked he would play the eccentric grandmother of protagonist Billy - an 11-year-old boy who follows his dream to become a dancer, against the expectations of a working class community during the 1980s miners’ strike in County Durham.

He said: “We have extra songs we didn’t include in the film that might have titles such as Goodbye Grandma and Not Only Poofs Do Ballet.

“You can only do so much on stage so it would be nice to change some things.”

Sir Elton, who was accompanied by husband David Furnish who is one of the show’s producers, revealed he would love it if one of his young sons grew up to play Billy in the stage show.

“Hopefully it will still be on when they are old enough,” he said.

“They [Zachary and Elijah] have never been to the theatre except The Snowman at Christmas - and we only lasted for half of it.

“But when they are older they will love it.

“I haven’t even taken them to The Lion King yet.”

Sir Elton composed the music for The Lion King.

Speaking after the special anniversary performance at the Victoria Palace Theatre, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry and writer Lee Hall confirmed they are planning a film version of the musical.
