Arts Diary: Will Marriott

Young people looking for a dramatically different way to spend their summer holidays are being offered chance to sign up to workshops run by Hull Truck Theatre. The theatre's Inter@ct team is staging a variety of innovative events, including one held at the Hull Street Life Museum, where young performers will create a piece among the trains, trams and horse-drawn carriages of the museum.

At other sessions during the holidays, young people aged between five and 21 will be able to learn more about drama and perform short plays.

The workshops kick off on August 3 and 4, when A Play in A Day will give children aged five to seven the chance to develop their drama skills before taking part in a performance in Hull Truck's Studio Theatre. Harrogate Summer Festival is celebrating this week after news that one of its stars has won a major commission.

Richard Jacques has composed a fanfare and finale for brass which is being played from the roof of Harrogate's Royal Hall during the Festival, which runs until August 1.

Now he has been commissioned to write the score for a new James Bond game, Blood Stone. Richard, who has strong connections with Harrogate, said: "It's a composer's dream. I am a huge Bond fan and it's a dream to score for Bond."

Richard used to visit the town for music lessons as a youngster and has been thrilled to lead the Bold as Brass initiative which will see six new compositions – the result of a region-wide competition inviting original works from aspiring young composers during the rest of the fortnight. James Bond 007 – Blood Stone is being developed by Bizarre Creations and stars Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench. It will be released at the end of the year.

Visitors who haven't heard the buzz should make a bee-line for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for a special bee-spoke day.

No, we haven't lost the plot, we're just joining in with what sounds like a fun day at the arts venue.

On Sunday, artist Rebecca Chesney and local bee experts are leading a day of bee-themed activities for all the family. The Bee-spoke Day offers the chance to view live hives on site, join walking tours of the stunning landscape and make a bee house. Learn about bee communication in waggle dancing workshops with Pif-Paf Theatre Company or walk the Bee Line trail. There will also be a screening of Vanishing of the Bees and a display of entries and prize-giving ceremony for The Co-operative's bee drawing competition.

Chesney has been on site at YSP since March, researching the bees and plants of the Bretton Estate during a year-long project. Working with the Barnsley Beekeepers' Association, she has introduced two colonies and an observation hive to YSP. Book on 01924 832528.

If you do go, please bee-have.
