Sheffield Wednesday's predicted League One finishing position compared to Barnsley, Ipswich Town and Derby County

NUMBER crunchers are predicting that Sheffield Wednesday will be pipped for automatic promotion in a frenzied three-way fight for two places at the top of League One.

Currently third in the table, the Owls are tipped to finish in their present position in May on 89 points, with the top two places to be filled by present incumbents Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town at the end of the season.

Leaders Argyle triumphed 4-2 in their Devon derby with Exeter on Monday. It was a record ninth successive win at Home Park.

Data boffins believe that they will lift the title come season's end with a haul of 92 points, one place and point in front of Ipswich.

Town, who are in second in the current table, drew 4-4 in a riotous game at Charlton last time out.

Wednesday, who beat Burton 4-2 last weekend, are unbeaten in six league matches since a late loss at Plymouth.

After a break for cup duties, they visit Accrington in their next league game on November 12.

The latest data gives Wednesday a 44 per cent chance of being promoted via the play-offs and 57 per cent of promotion. As for their prospects of lifting silverware, they are rated at 23 per cent.

Meanwhile, the experts reckon that Barnsley - who secured a welcome 2-0 win over Forest Green on Saturday to register a first league success in five matches - will miss out on the play-offs by one place and finish three points behind Portsmouth.

The Reds are currently in eighth spot and are tipped to finish seventh in May, according to the latest data.

They are given a 33 per cent chance of being promoted via the play-offs and a 14 per cent chance of promotion.
