Gordon Thompson

GORDON Thompson, a former headmaster of Baildon Church of England School who was known as "a true gentleman", has died aged 88 following a road accident.

He had lived in Morecambe for nearly 30 years following his retirement from teaching, returning to his native county to live with his sister.

Born in Lancaster, his training to be a teacher was interrupted by the Second World War during which he served in the Royal Navy as a

signaller on the destroyer HMS Obedient. When the war ended he went back to college and he also married his wife Jean. In 1950 they had their only child, Lynda.

After gaining his teaching qualifications, he became assistant headteacher of Christ Church, Church of England Primary School, in Lancaster.

Later Mr Thompson gained promotion becoming headmaster of Baildon Church of England Primary School, where he stayed until he retired at 60 and moved to Morecambe, where one of his favourite pastimes was sitting looking out over Morecambe Bay.

Just over a year ago he moved into the Sands Nursing Home on the town's Marine Road. He died in hospital following a road accident outside the home.

Away from teaching Mr Thompson spent many weekends playing golf.

His daughter died in 2008 after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his sister Dorothy, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife predeceased him.
