Famous diarist’s writing case goes on display
Anne Lister, entrepreneur, landowner and “forward thinker” was the owner of Shibden Hall, near Halifax, from 1826 to 1840.
Recently her diaries won a United Nations Award, the prestigious Unesco accolade for “Best of UK Heritage”.

Hide AdThe diaries are held by West Yorkshire Archive Service in Morley and provide a detailed insight into a remarkable and colourful life.
The portable case in which she kept all her writing materials was recently brought back to Shibden. The case had been in the possession of a family in France for a number of years.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member, Safer and Stronger Communities, Coun Pauline Nash, said the case was a real treasure.
“Anne Lister travelled widely and would have used this case to keep all of her writing materials safe.
“This latest award makes this item a true piece of history and a real treasure.”
