Hide AdWest Yorkshire Police responded promptly to the video and the officer was initially removed from front line duties before being suspended altogether.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct said today (Wednesday) that he was now being investigated for criminal and gross misconduct.
The investigation does not necessarily mean the officer will face any criminal charges.
IOPC Regional Director Miranda Biddle said: “Having examined a range of evidence including body worn video and initial accounts from the officers involved in the restraint, we have taken the decision that this is now a criminal investigation.
"A criminal investigation does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow.”
