YORKSHIRE Air Museum is flying high after unveiling a newly refurbished Astra digital cinema.

Saville Audio Visual of York donated the latest screen and audio visual projection technology to the Elvington-based museum.

The cinema was opened by John Sills, chairman and managing director of Saville, and the Lord Mayor of York. councillor Sue Galloway.

Museum director Ian Reed said: “The Museum incorporates the largest of the remaining wartime RAF stations. Like every other RAF base, it had its own Astra Cinema and with the generous support of Saville AV we’ve been able to bring ours into the 21st century, enabling us to show our historic films to visitors and enhance our popular corporate business facilities.”

The opening included the first private screening of the Museum’s film “Flightpaths,” which recently achieved runner-up position at the Imperial War Museum Film Awards 2011 in London.

It is hoped the new facility will be a valuable asset in attracting meeting and conference bookings to the site.
