Promotion to division three of Yorkshire Women’s Hockey league brought many changes to the small local side. Pocklington Ladies found that their new opponents were certainly more challenging than those of the previous seasons, as they had sailed through the lower divisions.

The start of the new season was uncertain, with previous members being unavailable and new members finding their hockey feet.

The first matches were challenging, with Pocklington losing the first five matches.

Despite this, there were many positive performances and the ladies knew it was only a matter of time before their fortunes changed.

The run up to Christmas was the key.

The team was beginning to gel and the results turned in the ladies’ favour.

Solid defending by captain Rachel Heath, Louise Grainger and keeper Kelley Burke kept the goals at bay whilst top goal scorer Lisa Sellars, supported by George Booth and Libby Rhodes, helped create healthy scoresheets.

The goals and the success kept coming in the New Year as the team went from strength to strength with the midfielders, Lydia Edwards, Jan Anderson and Laura Lancaster, supporting the defence and forwards tirelessly.

By the end of January, the team were third in the league.

Unfortunately, the season closed with some closely-fought matches, leaving them at the close with a respectable mid-table position.
