On the rare moments when the grass is on the drier side of wet, with great thanks to our excellent grounds man, Sutton have taken to the courts with vigour.
The highlight of the season so far has been the prestigious Howdenshire Cup. An exceptional turnout of 12 couples played including Veteran “Vince” who displayed dogged determination and a little match commentary to finish third together with partner Christel Wake.
The winners were Max Los and Lucy Collier who narrowly defeated Chris Hobson and Goldie Crosby in the final.
Sadly the vast majority of matches have so far been postponed.
The first mixed team travelled to Dunnington mid-week to face some stiff competition from a very young side. Dodging the showers and digging deep the side managed a convincing win 73-35. Louis Los playing with the canny Fiona Lambert managed a starting 27 games, Max Los with the equally astute Lucy Collier trampled the opposition with 24 games while Chris Hobson with late call up Peggy Hodgson shook off some cobwebs with 22 games.
The mixed second team travelled to the dizzy heights of Wetherby Castlegarth. Anna Fell with Stuart Turner continued their dominance, enjoying their evening next to the water, and crossing the finish line with 20 games. Peggy Hodgson with Adrian Hitchenor battled demons, the net and the bouncy courts throughout the evening to end with 17 games. Frankie Marsh with Sam Hitchenor forgot how to play tennis for the first two rounds but made up for it in the last, more than doubling their total ending with 13 games. Sadly it was a loss overall 58-50.
The weekend saw the men’s first team at home to Dunnington, who have just come down from the top division. Sutton struggled in the baking heat with Chris Hobson and Louis Los managing 12 games, Max Los and Adrian Hitchenor 13 Games and Zak Los and Tom Hitchenor 11 games, unfortunately a loss, 34-72.
A bit more practice will be needed for their next game which is away at promoted side Harlow in two weeks’ time.
