Runners take in golden circuit for marathon training

The inaugural running of the Golden Fleece Golden Circuit - in memory of local runner Bob Gunby - a 26.5 mile cross country race, attracted a number of Pocklington Runners who were looking for a good marathon training workout.

The day started out damp, overcast and chilly but once the sun came out it turned into a lovely day for running. Richard Ginn, Stephen Worth and Warwick Anderson finished in joint eighth place in a time of 4:07 with Di Thompson, Tracey Baty and Helen Crowle sharing a time of 7:11 and Beverley Varley came back in 8:13.

A well-earned plate of stew and cup of tea welcomed all the finishers.

117 runners turned out for the final heat of the East Yorkshire Cross Country league which took place at Sewerby.

Simon Rycroft was the first Pocklington Runner to complete the tough course in a time of 35:40, Kevin Norman had a strong run in 36:42 and picked up a medal for second in category, Patrick Piggott in 37:05 held off the challenge of Stuart Smith 37:21, Richard Ramshaw 38:11, Stuart Evans 39:42, Alan Kendra 40:07 beat Stephen Worth by one second, Paul Sheridan 43:44, Jill Dowson, the sole female runner from the club, had a good run of 44:24, despite a long bike ride to get to the race, and Simon Weedy 44:32.

Debbie Rycroft ran the Dewsbury 10K and, despite wet and murky conditions, grabbed a super PB of 51:04.

If you are training for a spring marathon and would like the company and support of other marathon runners then joining Pocklington Runners could be for you.

We meet for training runs on Wednesday evenings at the rugby Ccub at 6.30pm. Feel free to call in and join us for a run; ask for Jill Dowson or Marcus Bourne who will introduce you to those looking to run the same distance and pace as you.
