Rugby: Pocklington under-9s star on Leeds Carnegie stage

Pocklington under-9s played a half time demonstration match during Leeds Carnegie’s Championship semi-final play off against Newcastle on Monday 6 May.

The boys’ opportunity to play in front of 4,259 spectators at the Headingley Stadium resulted from their attendance of the Leeds Carnegie rugby camp over Easter and their participation in the half time pitch parade during the Leeds v Nottingham match on 20 April.

The pitch was filled with teams of various age groups demonstrating their skills. Pock were against the mighty Otley, who outscored our boys in the ten minutes of action. The boys played well and thoroughly enjoyed their big occasion, and of course the result of the main event; Leeds 24 - Newcastle 19, thanks to an injury time try by Leeds.

As the season ends, the team’s coaches, Stuart Jessop, Wayne Grainger and Lee Whitaker would like to thank all the boys for their great effort and enthusiasm in what has been a very encouraging first season of contact rugby, the parents for their support and encouragement and Danby’s Newsagent for their two years of sponsorship.

The team this season has been Aiden Fothergill, Andrew Lee, Arthur Whelan, Callum Childs, Daniel Bettison, Freddie Griggs, Henry Woodruff, Jacob Farrar, Joe Cheney, Joel Ashley, John Burley, Johnny Raper, Jude Symons, Olly Grainger, Patrick Jessop, Reece Underwood and Will Grewer. Any players wanting to join the team next season as under-10s will need to be Year 5 in September and should contact Stuart Jessop on 01759 318006 or
