Family affair in darts

Dave Smith claimed the Derek Longley Trophy with a 3-2 victory over son Kevin, coming back from 2-0 down in a closely-fought final at the Pocklington Sports and Social Club on Saturday night.

Earlier in the night, Dave had beaten Harvey May (2-1) and Dave Gowthorpe (2-0) to reach the final, while Kevin won through with last leg deciders against both Chris Gowthorpe and Gary Smith.

The finals night produced some quality darts with five of the players averaging over 53 on their open scoring with 142 scores of 60-plus, 42 of 80-plus and three tons. This was all before having to finish on Derek’s preferred double one.

The tournament raised over £900 for St. Leonard’s Hospice and the organisers wish to thank everyone who donated raffle prizes, bought raffle tickets, played in the tournament, called matches or scored – this fabulous total couldn’t have been achieved without everyone getting into the true spirit of the tournament.
