Saturday 12 May saw the Pocklington Dolphins take to the water yet again, this time in the friendly league at Beverley Leisure Centre, in an eight lane pool.
This was a very new experience for some of these swimmers, especially for gala first-timers George Van Dam and Freddie Mitchell and, against six other clubs from Scarborough, South Holderness, Ryedale, South Hunsley, Bridlington and the hosts Beverley, it was going to be a very interesting night’s swimming. With a few call-offs the Dolphins were not at full strength but still they didn’t let this affect them in any way.
As per usual, the first seven events were the team medley relays, and the Dolphins gained one first, two third places, two fourth places, and an unfortunate last place. But all the kids were smiling and enjoying themselves and a few PBs were also swum in these relays.
So, on to the individual events and, in the next 12 events the Dolphins gained one third place, two fourth places, three fifth places, two sixth places, and four seventh places. Again, although the placings were not favourable, they still had PBs yet again within the first set of individuals.
Back to the team relay events with the breaststroke relays and the Dolphins fared a little better in these, gaining one first place, two second places, and a third place and, yet again, they had swimmers pulling out all the stops and producing PB swims. The second set of individual swims also produced PB swims, and the following positions were one first place, two second places, three third places, two fifth places, and four sixth places.
The final set of events on the night were the freestyle relays with nine in total. There were still opportunities for the swimmers to pull that one big last swim out of the bag. With one second place, one third place, three fourth places, one fifth place, two sixth places, and one seventh place, it was a very long but thoroughly enjoyable night’s swimming and hats off to all those who took part and a special well done to all those that gained PBs. It just goes to prove, the harder you work in training the more PB times you get.
The swimmers who gained PBs were Josh Huzzard (three), George Van Dam (two), Freddie Mitchell (three), Roan Speck, Tom Darley (three), Daniel Ashton (two), James Wragg, Alex Cartwright (two), Brady Durkin (two), Karl Watson, Matthew Foot (two), Sam Clark (two), Louis Cameron, Louise Grainger (two), Rebecca Mardell (two), Imogen Minto, Gemma Marshall (two), Isobel Sinclair, Abbie Pickering, Holly Coop (two), Natalie Wragg, Katie Hopwood (two), and Caroline Foot (three).
Thanks go to all those who helped on the night. It was a very good performance that gave Alan and Sara great satisfaction to see their swimmers give their all.
