United struggle for a point against 10 men

Division Three

Market Weighton United 3

Viking Raiders Reserves 3

Goodmanham Road was the venue for this clash between two sides struggling this season for any kind of form, as Viking Raiders had yet to pick a point up on the road, and MW hadn’t picked up a point this year.

With MW Reserves’ clash postponed, the big guns of the 2nd team were drafted in to an extremely depleted 1st team – Dave O’Conner, Jonny Hardcastle, Will Nicholson and Jack Lewis all went straight in to the starting line up.

Spirits were lifted when the opposition showed up five minutes before kick off with only 10 players.

MW went straight to work with the advantage of the extra player and passed and moved excellently with Nicholson and Hardcastle controlling the midfield and supplying T Shaughnessy and Lewis on the wings, who in turn were supplying the two strikers of s bennett and O’Conner with plenty of ball.

R Renton in goal had little to do in the first half, with j aitken, t williamson, a walker and k roberts having a pretty easy first half too, as the opposition found it very tough going against the extra man.

MW’s good football paid off after about 20 mins when j lewis pounced on to a loose ball in the area and calmly slotted home. Things only got better when, five minutes after this, Bennett finished off another fine move with a goal. At half-time MW could easily have been four or five goals up.

As ever though with MW, this was a game of two halves. The Vikings came out somewhat possessed at the start of the second half believing they had every chance of getting back in to the game, and it wasn’t long before a ball down their right flank totally exposed the MW left back and left him nowhere as Raiders pulled one back.

O’Conner then slotted home to restore MW’s lead with a totally deserved goal having been involved in most of MW’s attacking plays. But MW found the self-destruct button as some poor defending and panicking lead to a Viking corner which wasn’t dealt with effectively and was tucked away by a Viking attacker bringing the score back to 3-2.

With 20 mins to play the MW management, in its wisdom, decided to make a trio of changes just to freshen up some tiring legs, l cox replaced j lewis on the right, d north replaced Shaughnessy on the left, and Graham replaced a walker at right back.

What happened next was the howler to top all howlers, captain j aitken shepherding the ball back to Renton in goal who called “keeper’s”, but then hesitated, which resulted in the the two players colliding and spilling the ball right to the feet of the opposing attacker who slotted home to bring the scores level.

With 10 minutes still to play, the game could have gone either way, but thankfully it ended honours even, which on the whole was probably the fairest result, but MW really need a big improvement to avoid relegation this season.

MW would like to thank rockcurl for their support and also the Griffin Inn, the new home of MW first team.
