Successful times for Barmby Moor School

School Football

After their win at Market Weighton, Barmby Moor School football team had their next round of competition at South Hunsley School.

The other teams who got through the tournament were Leven, Eastrington and Bugthorpe. Barmby’s first game was against local rivals Bugthorpe.

A bad injury for Adam Smith the day before the tournament brought Liam Loft into the squad. Barmby’s starting line up was Joseph Crossley in goal, Liam Loft and Alex Todd in defence, Tom Scrowston, Elliot Driver and Ben Smith in midfield and Alex Ashby upfront.

A quick breakthrough from Bugthorpe got Alex T and Liam L on their toes. Some beautiful passing by Alex A and Ben S gave Elliot a good shot at goal which tested the Bugthorpe keeper. A fantastic tackle and clearance by Liam Loft sent Tom sprinting down the wing. Tom shot from distance.

The ball floated over the defenders. It was heading for the top corner. Bugthorpe’s keeper stretched out as far as he could and saved the ball. But, surprisingly, the keeper dropped it and it fell into the back of the net. 1-0 to Barmby Moor.

A quick half-time change for Barmby brought in Alex A for Jack. After the break, Bugthorpe were raring to go and had some good chances. But Joseph dealt with that. He made some fantastic saves. Alex T and Liam were owning the defence. The Bugthorpe midfielder placed a ball behind Barmby’s defence. All of a sudden, a Bugthorpe player appeared from nowhere and was one-on-one with the keeper. Joseph stretched his legs out and his toes just knocked the ball out of play. It was an incredible save. Finally, the final whistle went with the score 1-0 to Barmby.

Barmby Moor’s next game was against Leven who looked a strong team. Barmby’s manager decided to play their strongest team, with Charlie on for Ben.

A quick pass from Alex A saw Tom running up the field. He placed a ball into the box to Jack, whose shot was just wide of the post. Leven took a quick goal kick before Barmby could get back. Alex T ran for the ball but the Leven player got there first. Alex T accidentally tripped him up.

It was a free kick to Leven on the edge of the box. The free kick was taken quickly and it was heading for the bottom left corner. Joseph Crossley dived low. He just got to it with his fingertips and tipped it out of play for another amazing save.

After half time Leven were getting tired. Alex A made a great run down the field, taking on all the defenders, and shot at goal. The keeper was stranded watching the ball fly past into the back of the net. Barmby kept the pressure on until the very last minute, to ensure it remianed 1-0.

Barmby Moor’s last game was against Eastrington who have been the champions three years running. We knew it would be a tough game. A quick run down the wing from Alex A and a cross into the box enabled Jack to volley it perfectly into the back of the net. Alex A made another good run into the Eastrington half but this time shot at goal himself. The ball went straight through the keeper’s legs and into the net to make it 2-0.

Eastrington made a quick break through Barmby’s midfield. Liam Loft was on to the ball like a cat pouncing on some string. He passed to Ben. Ben slotted a ball through the defenders to Alex A. Alex A was one-on-one with the keeper. He made no mistake and placed the ball into the bottom left corner. 3-0.

Barmby Moor had won the league. But it wasn’t over yet, Barmby still had the final coming up.

The final was against Leven, Barmby’s toughest opponents yet. Barmby were so happy they had won the league they had lost all concentration. The final score was 3-0 to Leven.

Unfortunately. Barmby did not win the winners’ shield but they were still through to the next round in Grimsby on 1 December. Well done to the whole team.
