Plenty of effort from Aztecs against Warriors

York Mitchell Sports League under-14s

Division 2

Rawcliffe Warriors7

Pocklington Aztecs2

The Aztecs started well with good link up play and were playing good possession football in the Rawcliffe half. Jack White was very solid at left back and playing some clever balls to Johnny Loft on the left wing.

The Aztecs forced the first corner but were unlucky not to break the deadlock with Johnny pushing the ball just wide of the post. Nick Price-Norman was playing well in midfield and lobbed the ball over the defence for Johnny to run on to, but was unable to produce a clean finish. The football was flowing with good confidence shown on the ball. Ben Richardson managed to get past the right back and put in a well-weighted cross for Johnny Loft, who headed wide.

On Rawcliffe’s first break, Jack White slid in to produce an inch-perfect tackle and snuff out the danger. The first goal came on 20 minutes, against the run of play, with only Rawcliffe’s second foray into the Aztecs half. This seemed to lift Rawcliffe and they started to come forward with flowing pass and move football. It was not long before a second goal, with a good move down the right hand side and cross into the middle and a cool finish. Patrick Wilson then had a brilliant solo effort blocked on the line after beating the keeper – so unlucky after such a great effort. The lads did not deserve to go in at half time 2-0 down.

The second half started off poorly, with the Aztecs conceding an unnecessary third goal with another good pass and move from Rawcliffe. The Aztecs had another chance to get a goal back with a good cross from the left hand side and Ben Richardson heading just wide of the post. Rawcliffe then scored a fourth after Peter Fox saved a Rawcliffe shot from the striker with his feet, only for the ball to land at the feet of the Rawcliffe winger to pass in.

An Aztecs goal followed shortly afterwards, after the introduction of Aaron Fraiser to the midfield. It was he who started and finished the move. Aaron won the ball, passed to Cameron Storey on the wing, who passed on to Patrick Wilson, who crossed back into the centre for Aaron to slot home.

The Aztecs then hit the self destruct button with an own goal, failing to clear their lines. The sixth and seventh were good strikes from Rawcliffe. Johnny Loft then did well to take the ball past the Rawcliffe keeper but could not keep the ball inside the line.

The Aztecs then got a second goal after a good long throw from Richard Tinson to Cameron Storey, who flicked the ball into the path of Patrick Wilson, who hassled and battled against the two taller defenders and passed into the path of an advancing Aaron Fraiser for his deserved second of the match.

The Aztecs then conceded a penalty but the striker slammed it against the post, just before the final whistle, which gave a scoreline that does not reflect the effort, particularly in the first 20 minutes.

More positives again this week, with good link up play and battling for every ball, but the lads must stick to their positions at all times and take their chances to force their first win.

Men of the match: Patrick Wilson, Aaron Fraiser, Cameron Coulthard.
