The East Riding Umpires and Scorers Association will be running its annual Level One training course for cricket umpires from Sunday, February 1.
The course will be held at Hull Zingari CC in Chanterlands Avenue, and will last for 8 weeks. The cost to students will, as usual, be £20, and will include all course literature and materials.
The tutor will again be Michael Free, who last year had a remarkable success rate, with all nine students passing the exam, with an average pass mark of 92%.
Sitting the exam at the end of the course is optional, not compulsory. It does, however, provide a very good knowledge of the laws of cricket and is the first step towards upward progress.
Any cricketer who is coming to the end of his playing career, and would like to take up the white coat, club umpires who want to extend their knowledge of the laws of the game, any current umpire who would feel the course would be suitable for revision and updating their current knowledge, and of course, any cricket lover will be welcome.
The current membership of the East Riding Umpires and Scorers Association is almost at an all-time low, with as few as 22 serving umpires standing on a regular basis, and a small proportion of these rapidly approaching well-deserved retirement after many years of service.
Consequently, new members are desperately needed.
