After the first game at home was called off due to the weather Pocklington seconds, sponsored by Sweetmove Estate Agents got their season underway this week away to Companthorpe seconds.
After losing the toss, Pock were asked to bat first and struggled from the start to cope with low bounce and uneven pitch as N.De destroyed the batting line up with 5-14 for the hosts from his nine-over spell. After only 15 overs, Pock were in all sorts of trouble at 31-7 with Dan Croft (10) the only batsmen in the top seven to reach double figures.
Adam Thomas and Simon Baty (17) provided some brief resilience as they moved the score onto 57 before both fell cheaply. Copmanthorpe then soon cleaned up the tail and eventually bowled Pock out for 67 in only 29 overs.
Companthorpe, chasing only 68 for victory, managed far better than Pock’s batsmen and knocked off their target in the 29th over only losing three wickets with James Saltmer, Pete Powell and Croft each claiming a wicket. It could have been a closer game had some decisions gone Pock’s way as three lbw appeals were turned down and a stumping not given.
The seven wicket defeat however was no more than Pock deserved after a dismal batting display and it is safe to say that more practice is required by everyone. Next week Pock seconds are at home against Woodhouse fourths and a much better overall performance will be required.
Pock would also like to say a big thank you to Ted Baty for scoring.
