We have here in Pocklington a vibrant town with a large influx of residents coming to live in Pocklington from outside the area.

While interacting with these new residents it starkly comes across that in every case they find Pocklington a lovely place to live, and when you actually sit down and look at what we have here you understand why they are coming to our town.

There are volunteers trying to give Pocklington that something more to improve our lifestyles and yes it comes from personal interest in the activity, eg. beer fans = beer festival, music lovers = Platform Festival, Flying Man Festival, walkers/cyclists various routes, Pilgrimage of Grace activities, U3A activities – and the list goes on.

Ten years ago all we had was the Rugby Sevens and late night shopping now we have Summer Fetes, firework nights, walking festivals, the Arts Centre brings in big names into town.

All this and more has to be celebrated, but – and there is a but – in many cases it is the same faces that achieve all this with little or no thanks.

In fact the opposite can be the norm with criticism if people have to pay or it’s not exactly what they want. Ask them to get involved and it all goes quiet.

So from me a big thank you. For without the commitment each one gives then we would not have the diverse events in the town.

Therefore, rather than complain and run things down get involved, whether you’re new to the town or long-term resident, shopkeepers need to embrace positive actions that help the town thrive then your shops will thrive alongside. What we need is more members of public/business to embrace something that excites them and get involved.

It would be nice to see the chamber of trade resurrected in some guise so that the businesses and shopkeepers of the town/industrial estate have an input into what happens in town. They can support as well as influence the mechanisms that make it all work.

So to all new and old Pocklingtonians get off your backsides and get involved in your town! If you contact Pocklington Town Council I am sure we can give you the information that points you to your personal interest.
