On behalf of our small committee, our chairwoman, Ann Cox, and I would like to express our thanks to all the residents of Pocklington and the surrounding villages who visited the town centre for our Festival of Christmas evening on December 2 and who enabled us to achieve a very successful and enjoyable evening.
We would also like to thank the large number of the town centre shop owners, pubs and restaurant owners and staff for their time in opening late and offering a warm reception to customers with their mince pies and other delights. The competitions for best dressed shop window, odd one out and best dressed staff were very well supported and there were some impressive prize winners. There were some lovely imaginative touches too like the little white painted upright piano in the Vintage Corner shop being used by a lady singer and lady accompanist during the evening!
Our thanks too must go to our four local schools and the Rev Hollingsworth for their support and participation in the musical evening in All Saints Church; our friends in the Lions group for their Santa procession and grotto, and not forgetting our new local West Wolds Radio team for their very active support during the evening. We thank too, our group of town council members who volunteered their help with the management of the road closure program and other tasks during the afternoon.
This event, which is organised and run by a small team of volunteers and which takes many weeks to plan, is self-financing and we are, therefore, most grateful to the many businesses in the town who contributed to the event by offering prizes for our tombola, which is run jointly with the Pocklington Scouts group, or by direct donation. This support will once again enable us to plan for the 2016 Christmas festival and we are very keen to ensure success again next year. We are always seeking further volunteers to join us by spending a few hours weekly in the weeks running up to the event and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to join us. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to get in touch.
A merry Christmas and happy new year to you all from Ann, Peter and Steve, Gerry, Richard and Lisa.
Cllr Peter Winterton
