Letter: Reopening line would spell end of our markets

Just a quick note of interest for your readers.

I attended the recently revived Market Weighton Saturday market and was impressed by the turnout of both shoppers and stallholders. I also saw that the Mayor, Coun Peter Hemmerman, was rightly singing its praises.

Nothing wrong in that, except to point out that this is the same councillor who continues to promote the ‘benefits’ of re-opening the Beverley to York railway line.

If that ever happened, there would be no Saturday market for Market Weighton; no Tuesday market for Pocklington, and, in fact, no need for any shops in either town since everyone would be travelling to Beverley or York courtesy of the Hemmerman express.
