Your article: Market Weighton’s band of brothers

In my first article I mentioned that the man who laid the wreath on behalf of the Market Weighton War Committee at the official opening of the War Memorial Institute was Mr W J Smith of 3 Londesborough Road.

Four of his sons had joined up and only two returned, a situation that was sadly repeated in many families across the country.

At the end of the 19th century people still had large families and although infant mortality was still high, it was improving and so by the time of the First World War it was not unusual for several brothers to join up. Indeed even in Market Weighton there was a family where five brothers joined up and again, as with the Smiths, tragically two were killed.
