A keen sportsman with an impressive CV of charity sporting events is about to embark on his biggest sporting challenge to date – completing seven triathlons in seven consecutive days.

Pocklington-born Dave Burrows decided to do the challenge after working his way up to completing his first triathlon two years ago.

The competent runner and cyclist pushed himself to improve on his basic swimming skills, with the hope that he would be able to complete one event.

One event turned into many and Dave joined the Yorkshire Vikings Triathlon team, based in Selby.

Under the tutelage of coach Naiomi Saunders, the team are going from strength to strength and so it seemed like a good time and opportunity for Dave to push himself further as a triathlete. With the support of his teammates he plans to complete seven pool sprint triathlons from 5 to 11 October, based at Selby Leisure Centre. A pool sprint triathlon is a 400-metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride, followed by a five-kilometre run.

When deciding on a charity to raise money for, Dave set on Candlelighters, a children’s cancer charity that provided support to a friend of the team a few years ago. Candlelighters is based in Leeds and support children and their families going through the trauma of childhood cancer in Yorkshire. Dave is looking to not only raise money, but also raise awareness of this fantastic charity helping people who have had their lives turned upside down in an instant.

With just over a month until the event, the training and fundraising are in full swing. Help and support has poured in not only from Yorkshire Vikings but also Triathlon England and local graphic designer Mark Scott Smith offered his services creating the event’s eye catching logo and poster. Dave, who now lives in York with his family, is also keen to encourage friends, family and members of the public to show their support by taking part. Anyone wanting to join in can just do a section, rather than a full race.

In the past Dave has cycled up Mount Snowdon with a group of friends, which raised £3,510 for Leeds Children’s Hospital.
