Community fundraising ‘Angels’ have donated a bench to the Market Weighton Group Practice in Medforth Street.
The Weighton Angels, a sub-group of the Weighton Wolds Rotary Club, is for local people and businesses who do not have time to be members but who want to contribute to the rotary club’s fundraising initiatives. They donate a monthly £5 subscription to raise funds purely for Market Weighton and district charities and community projects.
Chris Clubley, President of the Weighton Wolds Rotary Club, said: “We hope to recruit enough Weighton Angels to raise £6,000 a year to benefit the Market Weighton community. We put £600 from the subscriptions we have received so far towards the bench which is now positioned at the entrance to the GP practice. The surgery needed a bench so patients would have somewhere to rest while waiting for a taxi or a lift. On behalf of the rotary club, I would like to thank all those whose generous support helps us to fund worthwhile projects like this.”
The Weighton Wolds Rotary Club, which meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Bay Horse, on Market Place, Market Weighton, has also just launched a new initiative to help lonely, elderly people in the community. Members have joined the nationwide Contact the Elderly scheme which organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and over, who live alone with little or no support from friends, family or statutory services. Rotary club members are providing transport and organising monthly Sunday tea parties at their homes to provide a lifeline of friendship.
