A talk about the Wolds Wagoners will take place at the next meeting of the Pocklington and District Local History Group on 22 January.
The Wagoners were a reserve force, founded before the start of World War One, by Sir Mark Sykes of Sledmere. He recognised the need in warfare for men with skills handling horses and drew his force from the local population. The Wagoners were mobilised within days of war being declared and some of the men received their mobilisation papers as they worked in the harvest fields. The talk, by Sue Cartledge, will be held at the old courthouse on George Street at 7.30pm. There is an admission charge of £2.
