A pub in Sancton could be enjoying a dual celebration after it was shortlisted for two tourist awards.

Customers of the The Star are being urged to cast a vote in the Remarkable Pub category in the Visit Hull and East Yorkshire annual tourism awards.

But the gastro establishment could have another reason to celebrate after also being shortlisted in the Remarkable Food category.

Ben Cox, who owns and runs The Star with his wife, Lindsey, said: “We’re thrilled to have been shortlisted in two different categories, particularly as one category recognises the high standard of the food we serve and the other is for the best pub in Hull and East Yorkshire.

“The best pub category is the one voted for by the public, rather than by a panel of judges, so we’re really hoping that our customers, old and new, will vote for us.”

Last summer The Star re-opened for business following a major extension and refurbishment project, which breathed new life into the 300-year-old village pub. It created a new bar area; and a restaurant capable of accommodating 80 diners.

Ben added: “Both Lindsey and I originate from the village of Sancton and, since taking over, we’ve tried hard to balance The Star’s impressive heritage as a popular village pub with demand from customers who want to dine with us.

“The fact that we’ve been shortlisted for these awards is a really pleasing indication that our efforts are paying off.”

The REYTAs (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards) are open to businesses and organisations that have made a significant contribution to tourism in Hull and East Yorkshire. The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony at Bridlington Spa on 24 March.
