What a fantastic day in Market Weighton for the Tour de Yorkshire.
The whole town was decked out in blue and yellow bunting, balloons and old bikes!
Volunteers from the Town Team met at our Paper Shop in the early hours to blow up and then put up hundreds of balloons and ribbons in the High Street while most of the town was still asleep.
A special thank you to Sally of Sally Mays for providing all the ribbon and also for Sally (the landlady from the Griffin) for arriving at 6am with sausage and bacon sandwiches. What a star!
The Chairman and Secretary of the Town Team drove around to judge the competition for best dressed house and were quite emotional at all the effort everybody had made.
The winner was 5 Southgate Court who received a box of chocolates and a bottle of fizz!
The High Street looked amazing and record crowds gathered just before noon as the anticipation mounted.
First the police motorbikes put in place the rolling road closure and that was an entertainment all by itself.
Seeing the riders pass through was everything we had hoped for and the real sense of their speed really did have to be seen to be believed.
Wonderful! And then they were gone and the happy spectators spilled into the Craft Fair and the shops and hostelries.
Many of the spectators were on their first trip to Market Weighton but I’m sure they will be back.
The feeling of comradery on the day as residents joined together to make sure the town looked its best was I believe Britain at its best.
We welcomed the new manager of TSB, Sally Anderson, as she presented the Town Team with A cheque for £100, the first instalment of their commitment to support the Town Team this year.
Our next project is Giant Community Day on Market Weighton High Street on Sunday 12 July but more details about that nearer the time.
