Superfast broadband now available
Residents and businesses in Pocklington are being encouraged to get connected and grasp the benefits of superfast broadband.
Thanks to the Broadband East Riding project, a partnership between East Riding Council and BT, fibre broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps are now available to more than 4,000 homes and businesses in the town. The council is encouraging residents and businesses to find out what difference faster broadband speeds could make to them and order the service from the internet service provider (ISP) of their choice.
Councillor Jonathan Owen, deputy leader of East Riding Council and cabinet portfolio holder for transformation and strategic partnerships, said: “With superfast broadband speeds now available we would strongly urge residents and businesses in Pocklington to check with their ISP for service availability and upgrade.
“Broadband East Riding is an excellent example of the public and private sector working together for the benefit of residents and customers. Both the council and BT are working in partnership to ensure local communities benefit from high-speed broadband, which is essential in this digital age, as technology develops and more and more business and social connections are made online.
“It is brilliant that people and businesses in Pocklington are now able to access the very best broadband services and that these benefits will be eventually enjoyed by the whole region.”
John Skidmore, director of corporate strategy and commissioning at the council, said: “At home, superfast broadband will enable people to run multiple bandwidth-hungry applications at the same time making gaming, watching BBC iPlayer, using Skype to keep in touch with friends and family anywhere in the world, or downloading films and music much quicker and free from ‘buffering’ or screen freeze.”
Tom Keeney, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “It’s great news that more than 4,000 homes and business in Pocklington and 24,000 across East Riding have access to high-speed fibre broadband on the BT network as a result of this successful partnership and BT’s own commercial fibre broadband programme.
“Together, we and our public sector partners are creating a lasting legacy, which will play a vital role in the future success and prosperity of our local communities and our nation. Already millions of UK households and businesses are benefiting from the huge opportunities offered by fibre broadband with many more joining them every month.”
Broadband East Riding is a £14million partnership between the council and BT and is funded by grants from Broadband Delivery UK, £5.5m, and The European Regional Development Fund, £4.4m, along with investment from BT and the council.
Broadband East Riding will make superfast fibre broadband speeds of more than 24Mbps available to over 42,000 homes and businesses in the East Riding by December 2015.
