A fun race event has been organised by a Pocklington woman to raise money for charity.

The March Hare Race is the brainchild of Ruth Startin, who last year set up Kangaroo’s Pop-Up Restaurant.

It’s the latest fundraiser that Ruth has come up with to raise cash for Hull and East Yorkshire MIND.

She said: “Following on from last year’s successful charity ‘stressless’ pop-up restaurant held in Pocklington, Kangaroos – aka Ruth Startin – is organising something a bit different.

“The March Hare is a 5km ‘Virtual Charity Race’ in which participants can choose to walk, run, ride or roll the distance anytime between the 1st and the 11th of March.

“Racers just need to pre-enter via eventbrite and then share their results on Kangaroo’s Facebook Page to be in with a chance of winning some brilliant spot prizes.

“You can complete the distance in whatever mode suits you best: organise a hack with friends, a family bike ride, join in a local parkrun or head along to Pocklington Runners on a Wednesday night.

“Instead of the usual first, second and third places, this race is about encouraging participation and having a bit of fun. Everyone has an equal chance of winning. At the same time, the message behind this is that everyone has a chance of being affected by mental illness – one in four people, according to MIND.

“Prizes have been kindly donated by local businesses as well as some national brand names. So far, the prizes include a family pass to William’s Den, a voucher for Burnby Equestrian Centre, a trial membership and personal training session at Cross Fit YO4, BAM bamboo clothing, Warriortees T-shirt and Dinki Donut Horse Treats.”

The event is part of Ruth’s fundraising efforts this year for Hull and East Yorkshire MIND, culminating in a climb to the summit of Mont Blanc in September.

This is a big personal as well as physical challenge for Ruth as she was due to take part in a similar expedition a number of years ago but was unable to participate as she was suffering from anorexia.

She said: “Hull and East Yorkshire MIND were an amazing support and the help I received was definitely a big part of my recovery.

“I just want to be able to give something back and in some small way say thank you.”

All participants will receive a bespoke race medal, and event T-shirts, designed by Lush Graphics – based on Pocklington’s Industrial Estate – are available to buy.
