School stars of the future

The Beswick and Middleton Federation of schools is looking for some stars of the future.

The STARS, which stands for Supporting Teaching And Reading Scheme, visit school to support children with their reading.

The Scheme recruits volunteers to work with children on a one-to-one basis to develop their reading skills, improve their confidence and raise their self-esteem. The aim of the scheme is to provide relaxed, adult help to those children who do not find reading easy or who are in need of support. It also helps children to develop an interest in reading and enhance their enjoyment of books. Volunteers typically offer two hours per week.

Steve Woodhouse, Executive Headteacher at the schools, said: “I have always had groups of STARS in the schools I have worked in.

“The children benefit greatly and we would love to have more volunteers on board within our federation.’

To be a valued STARS volunteer you do not need any experience as full training and support can be provided.

“All volunteers are required to undertake a CRB check which is free of charge.
