The scheme recruits volunteers to work with children on a one-to-one basis to develop their reading skills, improve their confidence and raise their self-esteem.

The aim of the scheme is to provide relaxed, adult help to those children who do not find reading easy or who are in need of support.

It also helps children to develop an interest in reading and enhance their enjoyment of books. Volunteers typically offer two hours per week.

Steve Woodhouse, headteacher at the school, said: “I have always had groups of STARS in the schools I have worked in.

“The children benefit greatly and we would love to have more volunteers on board in Holme on Spalding Moor.”

To be a valued STARS volunteer you do not need any experience as full training and support can be provided.

All volunteers are required to undertake a DBS check which is free of charge.

If you are interested in volunteering in the school, or would just like more information, please contact Mr Woodhouse on 01430 860287 or be emailing hosm@eastriding.gov.uk.
