There will be a distinct lack of crows around Market Weighton next Saturday (12 May) when the town holds its fourth annual Little and Large Scarecrow Festival.

The High Street will be transformed for the day with lots of straw characters placed outside the town’s businesses and community venues.

Great refreshments will be on offer.

The Market Weighton Town Team, which organises the Little and Large Scarecrow Day, is asking local businesses and groups to get involved if they are yet to join the fun.

The deadline for entries is the Saturday (5 May) and interested parties can book a place on the High Street by contacting organiser Gillian Riley.

The theme for the Little and Large Scarecrow festival is heroes, which will keep the young ones interested as families walk around the town to see the various creations.

Residents and visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for the best scarecrow and there will be prizes and gifts to be won.

The little scarecrows, created by the area’s children, will be on show at the Community Hall on the day.

Weary visitors will also be able to get refreshments at the venue while admiring the creations.

The Town Team has been busy running a competition through the schools for the little people of the town to take part by designing scarecrows using two litre pop bottles.

Town team member Gillian Riley said: “We need your help to make this date a success!

“Please get involved with this fun, family event and make a scarecrow which will be displayed on the High Street.

“There is still time to enter a character but be quick so we can designate a site for your straw friend – and don’t forget to give him/her a name!

“There will be lots to do on the day to keep all members of the family happy and entertained.

“There will also be a number of craft and market stalls along with various bouncy castles at the Community Hall.

“The Little Scarecrows, which are created by children from the area’s schools, are always fantastic and well worth a look when you visit the Community Hall.”

Email email or call 01430 626259 to enter a scarecrow.

Entrants are responsible for getting their scarecrow to the designated site by 10am and later removing it at 4pm.

Please display the name of your scarecrow, too.

Voting slips can be collected on the day for the Large Scarecrows from The Paper Shop and the Community Hall and returned to the same places.

Voting slips for the Little Scarecrows will be found only at the Community Hall (blue slips).
