Sessay won the toss and chose to bat first, but the Yapham girls got off to a great start with a wicket in the first over by opening bowler Amelia Love: Amelia’s accurate bowling resulted in only 5 runs scored off her 3 overs.

Molly Gamble then took another 2 wickets, but the Sessay innings was held together by Yorkshire player Olivia Kibler, who scored 46 before being bowled by Grace McKernon.

Grace’s bowling was deceptive and deadly, taking 4 wickets for 5 runs in just 10 balls, ending the Sessay innings for a total of 90 runs.

Yapham wicket keeper Mia Aconley was in good form behind the stumps, with all the team (including the younger players such as Libby Ashcroft and Poppy Smith) giving a spirited team fielding performance, well captained by Poppy Liddell ably assisted by Mia.

Maisie Hughes and Libby Ashcroft opened the batting for Yapham, with Maisie scoring an excellent 17 including nonchalantly pulling the Sessay bowlers to the boundary for two well-timed 4s, much to her and the team’s delight!

Despite losing a couple more wickets, Mia Aconley then led the Yapham quest for victory with a determined 25 not out, but unfortunately ran out of partners when Sessay took the last Yapham wicket for a total of 71 runs.

Although they lost, the young Yapham team (with only one Year 8; the others will be eligible to play U13s again next season) were deservedly very pleased with how they had played – and most importantly, both teams played the game competitively but with great spirit and sportsmanship, and in the lovely setting of Bishop Wilton on a sunny Bank Holiday afternoon it was an occasion much enjoyed by all the players and their parents.

Good luck to Sessay as they progress to the next round – and all credit to the Yapham girls for an excellent game.

Yapham CC have been working with the Yorkshire Cricket Board over the past few years to help develop Women and Girls’ cricket in the area.

With the U13 Girls team and also a busy season for Yapham Women’s team (who are also running ‘taster’ sessions for new players), there are a lot of opportunities: anyone interested in playing or finding out more should contact David Booth, Yapham CC Juniors and Women & Girls’ Cricket Coordinator, via [email protected] or 01759 368146/07941 466954.
