Police warn drivers about possible scams around Pocklington and Market Weighton

Residents in Pocklington, Market Weighton and surrounding area are being warned about a possible scam taking place in lay-bys.

Locations where scams may be taking place include Pocklington, Barmby Moor and Market Weighton.

Multiple reports have been received regarding a suspected scam consisting of a vehicle stopped in a lay-by, using hazard warning lights, with a person then trying to flag down passing motorists – claiming that their vehicle has broken down and that they need money for fuel.

A police spokesman said: “Descriptions have varied from Asian to Eastern European, and sometimes also have passengers in their vehicle, including children.

“Locations reported include Pocklington, Barmby Moor, Market Weighton and also North Yorks areas.

“Such scammers could target any area, please be wary of any suspicious circumstances and do not hand over money to anyone unknown at the side of the road.”
