The outdoor elements of this year’s Festival of Christmas, which was due to be held in Pocklington today, have been cancelled.
They were dropped due to the torrential rain and predicted high winds.
The late night shopping and Santa’s grotto will go ahead with some stalls moving to All Saints Church.
Pocklington Town Council said that all the stall holders would be refunded following the decision.
Santa will still set off from the Post Office at 5pm as he travels to Pocklington’s All Saints Church where his grotto is based.
The Pocklington Town Council said: “The fairground, market stalls and out street entertainment have been cancelled due to the expected dreadful weather.
“We do not take these type of decisions lightly, they are based on health and safety grounds.
“The festival itself is still going ahead, just not the outdoor activities.
“The late night shopping goes ahead as planned and Santa’s Grotto in All Saints Church will take place.
“A number of local organisations which would have had stalls, such as The Brownies, Friends of the Pocklington Arts Centre, The Pocklington Lions and the Rotary Club have relocated to the church.
“Some other stall holders will be using vacant premises in town.
“We can understand there may be frustration about this decision but everyone at the council is also disappointed with the situation.”
