A Pocklington professional golfer has branched out to open a new gym in the town – inspired by the latest fitness success story CrossFit.

Michael Dennington has opened CrossFit YO4 on Pocklington Industrial Estate, teaming up with his wife, Jennifer, to convert a former industrial unit on Hampden Road into a CrossFit gym.

A keen sportsman at Woldgate School, Michael grew up in Pocklington and still lives in the town. He played for Pocklington’s rugby and soccer clubs before concentrating on golf as a sport, then a career.

Starting out locally at the KP Club he went on to play on the professional circuit; and now owns York Golf Academy, giving golf lessons while still playing some PGA tournaments.

He has always been keen on personal fitness and tried several approaches before discovering CrossFit with his brother Chris a few years ago.

Quickly becoming an enthusiast and joining a CrossFit gym – it also had a far reaching effect on his personal life, meeting his future wife and fellow devotee Jennifer.

Michael said: “Having tried many gyms, learning new skills and working alongside others was so different we never looked back.

“Jennifer and I met through a love of CrossFit, together we can’t wait to create for others what we’ve been fortunate to experience ourselves.”

Conceived in California in the 1990s, CrossFit is now one of the world’s fastest growing fitness programmes.

Michael added: “CrossFit’s the sport of fitness but it really is for anyone, scaled in intensity to allow everyone to train in the same enjoyable atmosphere.

“We aim to bring people health and fitness in a new way. CrossFit allows you to exercise together unlike any other gym you’ve ever been to, learning all styles of functional movement that make a genuine difference.

“We truly believe in what we’re doing and hope to have a positive influence on as many local people as possible. Since opening it’s gone really well, with men and women, experienced, accomplished and total beginners, older and younger, all coming down and straightaway enjoying the experience.”
