A funeral service was held at All Saints’ Church, Driffield on Friday, July 27 for Mr Jim Kirkwood of New Road, Driffield who died peacefully on July 17, aged 91.
The service was conducted by the Rev Robert Amos & the organist was Mr Peter Maw.
Jim was born in Hull but grew up and attended school in Hessle. After leaving school he joined the Merchant Navy and sailed on tankers carrying explosives during the war.
He met his wife Margaret at a Town Hall dance and they married in Bridlington. They went on to have one daughter Susan and later 2 grandsons Michael & Paul followed by 7 great grandchildren, he was very family orientated and proud of them all.
After leaving the Merchant Navy he was an aero nautical engineer at Hawker- Sidley, working in the experimental department on the Harriers Jump Jet amongst other things. He later went to work at Armstrongs, finishing off at The Ropery where he was instrumental on work on the Humber Bridge.
Jim was a member of Driffield Navigation, his greatest wish was to see the canal open to craft from Hull to Driffield, he was very involved in fund raising and canvassing in a bid to see his wish come to fruition.
He was a founder member of the Drriffield Hospital Defence League and played his part in retaining hospital services at Driffield.
He was a supporter of the Driffield Muscular Dystrophy Group and helped to raise funds to help a Driffield child who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy.
During the 1980’s Jim attended many meetings with rail providers to ensure that they rethought planned closure of the railway line between Hull and Scarborough, a link we still enjoy today.
He was a Vice Chairman of the Driffield Silver Band and supported them for many years, he was very proud of their achievements and loved to hear them play.
Jim served on the Driffield Town Council for many years and was the Mayor of Driffield twice. He also represented Driffield as a councillor on the East Yorkshire Borough Council. He was elected as a labour Councillor on the newly created East Yorkshire Council, representing Driffield and rural Ward. He was the Shadow Chairman of the council and became the Chairman in 1996.
Jim was a very principled man, he was very much involved in the local community, a true gentleman who will be greatly missed.
