Organisers of a Pocklington family fun day have chosen Yorkshire-based national charity Heart Research UK to benefit from its fundraising.

The heart charity is among those chosen to benefit from the fundraising of those taking part in It’s a Pockout competition inspired by the famous BBC TV show “It’s a Knockout”.

Hosted by TV personality Keith Chegwin, the event will be taking place on Bank Holiday Monday 29 August at Pocklington Rugby Club and is free to the general public to attend and watch.

Organised by Pocklington District Lions, they hope to bring the community together to form 18 teams of between six and 10 people aged 16 or over.

The organisers are still accepting bookings for those wanting to take part in the knockout games.

Richard Knill, immediate past president of Pocklington District Lions and one of the games organisers, has felt the benefits of heart research personally when he was fitted with a pacemaker in 2008.

He said: “Without medical research it is abundantly clear to me that I, and many people like me, would not be alive today, thanks to the brilliant work carried out by charities such as Heart Research UK.”

Pocklington District Lions Club began this project to raise funds for five charities including Heart Research UK, The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Mencap, Macmillan Cancer Support and The MS Society. It is also about giving the residents of Pocklington and Market Weighton a free family fun day in the hope that this will become an annual event.

The games start at noon following a procession from The Market Place in Pocklington, headed up by “Cheggers”, Pocklington’s very own Town Crier Geoff Sheasby and The City of York Pipe Band.

Angus O’Donnell, who came up with the idea for It’s a Pockout and has been learning the bagpipes, recently become a new member of The York Pipe Band and will join them in leading the march.

Attendees are encouraged to come in fun fancy dress and enjoy the trade stands, bouncy castle and food and drink options, while watching the participants fight through the assault course.
