A fitness co-ordinator celebrated his 53rd year by completing 53 demanding physical challenges in 53 weeks.

Ivan Down said this was to challenge himself but also hoped to raise money for charity, and continuing the theme he set a target of £5,300.

He completed the final of his year-long challenges recently with the 10k Muddy Boots at Ripon.

Over the year, Ivan, who works at Francis Scaife Leisure Centre, ran 568.9 miles, rode a bike 1343.9 miles, swam 9.8 miles, rowed 29.8 miles, completed 16,968 step ups, 10,000 repetitions with a 10kg kettle bell, 10,000 reps with a 12kg barbell, 2000 sit ups & 1000 press-ups, 228 hours and 18 minutes of exercise completed.

All funds raised will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK, Stroke Association, Scope, British Lung Foundation and also to the Army Benevolent Fund as prior to working for the East Riding Ivan spent nearly 25 years in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps.

He said: “Every little helps towards the fantastic work that these organisations do. I would like to thank everybody who has contributed. It’s been very tough at times but I’m delighted to have completed the challenges and managed to reach my initial target of £5300.”

Ivan added: “I will continue taking on challenges and have already put my name down for the Great North Swim 10k in June.”

Darren Jackson, senior facility manager at East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife, said: “Ivan’s effort and commitment was inspirational to both customers and staff.

“His desire to raise so much money for charity and good causes has created an incredible feel good factor here at East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife.
