Professional dog walker Steve Wainika had to paws for thought when one of the dogs he regularly takes for a stroll went into labour during a walk.
Steve, 64, of St Helen’s Road, Pocklington was taking four-year-old golden labrador ‘Penny’ for a walk through the Broadmanor estate in Pocklington when she stopped on The Green and gave birth to eight adorable puppies.
The situation came as a huge surprise to Steve, as he and Penny’s owners were not aware that she was pregnant.
Even though he had no experience of helping a dog in labour before, Steve managed to stay calm. The incident took place in the pouring rain, which made it even more challenging for Steve. Luckily, he was carrying some disposable surgical gloves, along with a towel and a blanket because it was raining, which came in handy. He said: “When I found out she [Penny] was having the puppies, I let her clean up the pups. Once she had done that I then put the gloves on. I moved the pups towards her stomach where the teats are. I put the blanket over the whole of her body to keep her warm and dry. I then rolled the towel up and placed it under her head. I then got in touch with a local veterinary practice and a vet came. The vet turned around and said I’m amazed how you were calm enough to do this.”
The vet took Penny and the puppies away, but they were returned to their owners shortly afterwards, and are now at home safe and well.
