The Year 8 rugby team travelled to Hullensians Rugby Club to compete in the East Yorkshire Merit League qualifiers.
Standing in the way of making the East Yorkshire Finals day were Goole High School, Cottingham and Wolfreton.
On arrival the boys went straight into their first fixture against Goole, who took an early lead scoring almost immediately. However, as the Woldgate boys slowly thawed, they began to dominate the game with great ball retention and direct running from the forward pack. By the final whistle Woldgate had overturned the Goole lead, the winning score was 15-5.
After a fantastic turn around and with confidence high, Wolfreton never got a look in during the second fixture. A great team performance in some pretty harsh conditions saw some fantastic rugby that the 1980’s French team would have been proud of! The final score ended 30-0 to Woldgate.
The third and final fixture would see the winner representing the area at the East Yorkshire finals. Cottingham had a clear size advantage and looked to use it early with a brutal tight game plan. Five minutes in and the consistent hard running from the Cottingham forwards paid off with the game’s first score. Lead by the team captain, Woldgate showed huge character, fighting their way back into the game with a contrasting style of fluid running rugby with Woldgate scoring the tournament winning try as the final whistle sounded.
A brilliant team performance the boys will now head for the finals at Driffield with confidence.
